Rousimar Palhares vs. Jake Shields set for WSOF 22
Pending a Tuesday approval from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, WSOF welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares (17-6) will put his title on the line against Jake Shields (31-7-1) on Aug. 1 in Las Vegas.
The contest will serve as the main event of “WSOF 22: Palhares vs. Shields,” which takes place at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The card is expected to air on NBCSN.
WSOF officials recently applied for the date with the NSAC, and approval is expected to be given at Tuesday’s commission meeting in Las Vegas. In this week’s new edition of “The MMA Road Show with John Morgan,” Sefo said that Palhares vs. Shields is the planned headliner.
“The main event for that will be Palhares vs. Jake Shields,” Sefo said. “That has to happen in Vegas.”
Palhares, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace known for his powerful (and dangerous) leg locks, has fought twice in the WSOF, earning both victories in the opening two minutes of the contest. In March 2014, Palhares tapped out Steve Carl to claim the WSOF welterweight title, and this past December, he submitted Jon Fitch in his first successful defense of the title.
Meanwhile, Shields has also fought twice under the WSOF banner and ended both fights by first-round submission. In October, Shields debut with a rear-naked choke victory over Canadian standout Ryan Ford before finishing Brian Foster with the same hold in January.
