WSOF signs Khabib Nurmagomedov's younger brother
Look out. There's another Dagestani prodigy named Nurmagomedov coming to North America.
World Series of Fighting has signed Abubakar Nurmagomedov, the younger brother of UFC contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, to a contract, WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdel Aziz told MMAFighting.com.
Abubakar, 24, has an MMA record of 9-1 and is coming off a first-round TKO win over Vladimir Gunzu at Fight Star: Battle on Sura 3 last month in Russia. All nine of Abubakar's nine victories have come by finish, including six knockouts. Last year, he was named Bloody Elbow's third best welterweight prospect in the world. Abubakar has been a pro since 2011.
Meanwhile, Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0) has taken the UFC by storm, winning his first six fights in the promotion. "The Eagle" will meet Donald Cerrone at UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas with a lightweight title shot likely on the line. Nurmagomedov will head to American Kickboxing Academy this week to begin preparing for the bout. It is becoming the Dagestan native's permanent U.S. home.
On that same card, the Nurmagomedovs' cousin Islam Makhachev, undefeated at 11-0, will make his UFC debut against Leo Kuntz. The 23-year-old is one of the top lightweight prospects in the world.
